New Jersey Installs Bridge Fence Aimed at Preventing Suicides

Workers have started installing a fence that officials hope will stem the number of suicides on New Jersey’s Victory Bridge.

The 110-foot-high span over the Raritan River links Perth Amboy and Sayreville. It has been the site of approximately 23 suicides and 84 attempted suicides since it was rebuilt in 2005.

Transportation Department spokesman Steve Schapiro tells the Home News Tribune the fence is designed to hinder people from climbing on the railing. Installation is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Fencing will be installed on the nearby Route 9 bridge next year.

The cost of both projects is about $1.4 million.
