New York’s Staten Island Gets $56M to Control Future Flooding

New York officials say $33 million in federal Sandy relief will be going toward the purchase of about 24 acres on Staten Island to control future flooding.

Sen. Charles Schumer and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture funding on Monday. They also announced an additional $23 million in funding to purchase flood plain easements in Midland Beach and New Dorp.

The city applied for the money through the Emergency Watershed Protection Program to fund Staten Island’s Bluebelt, a storm water management system for one-third of the island.
