Traffic Safety Legislation Set to Pass in New York City

The New York City Council is set to pass a sweeping legislative package aimed at improving traffic safety.

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the council will vote Wednesday on 17 bills and resolutions.

She says all are expected to pass.

The reforms include the designation of several new “slow zones” with a reduced speed limit of 20 mph.

The repair of broken traffic signals will be required within 24 hours. And penalties will be toughened on reckless motorists and cab drivers.

Some of the items will need approval by the state Legislature. Mark-Viverito says she is optimistic.

The council has coordinated efforts with Mayor Bill de Blasio. The mayor’s goal of eliminating all pedestrian, bicyclist and motorist deaths is called “Vision Zero.”
