Virginia Beach EMS Heightens Security After Drug Thefts

Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services has increased security procedures following the theft of drugs from two rescue stations and a locker at a hospital.

Spokesman Ed Brazle tells The Virginian-Pilot that EMS conducted an audit last week to ensure no other drugs were stolen.

The newspaper says the latest theft was discovered last week by a pharmacy technician at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital. The technician noticed while replenishing drug boxes in the EMS room that one was open and narcotics were missing.

In March, drugs were stolen during five break-ins at the General Booth rescue station and the Courthouse station.

Brazle says EMS crews are conducting more frequent equipment checks and increasing other security procedures.
