Scrap Metal Fraud Nets Prison Term for New Jersey Man

A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison and ordered to pay over $326,000 in restitution for running an interstate scrap metal scam through a supposed recycling company he registered in Montana.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 31-year-old Stephen Salvatore Intrieri of Mount Laurel, N.J. was sentenced for wire fraud during a hearing before U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen in Missoula on Feb. 20.

Prosecutors say Intrieri would identify himself as Tony Giordano, a salesman for Montana Metal Recyclers, and call businesses offering to sell them scrap metal. One New Jersey company reported losing $49,000 in transactions in 2009 and 2012 while another company said it paid Intrieri $95,000 for scrap metal it never received.

Prosecutors say Intrieri received approximately $370,000 from victims of the MMR scheme.
