Long Island School Zones Could Get Speed Cameras

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he wants speed monitoring cameras installed in school zones on Long Island.

He’s asking lawmakers to approve requests from Nassau and Suffolk counties to install cameras in school districts to combat speeding drivers. Speeding near schools there can cost drivers fines from $60 to $200 and an $85 court surcharge.

Motorists can’t be charged under current county laws unless a police officer catches them and issues a ticket.

The cameras would operate like the red light camera program already in place on Long Island.

The Suffolk County Executive’s Office says the pilot program’s first 20 cameras will go to large districts where speeding is a problem.

Cost estimates weren’t initially available.

Cuomo included the proposal in amendments to the $142 billion executive budget being considered by the Legislature.
