Penn State to Install 600 Security Cameras

Penn State University is in the process of installing more than 600 security cameras in dormitories and common areas of its main campus.

Penn State administrator Stan Latta says the work began in October and should be done by next May, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Latta says Penn State already has cameras in dorms at its campuses in Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Mont Alto, and Greater Allegheny.

The school says the cameras will monitor ground-floor entrance lobbies, exit stairwells, elevators and commons service desks. No cameras will be installed in dorm rooms, bathrooms, or other areas that would violate student privacy.

The cameras won’t be monitored 24 hours a day, but university police will review them when an incident occurs.
