Fire Siren in Western Maryland Could Soon be Removed

A fire siren in western Maryland is broken and could soon be removed.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that the Funkstown Town Council voted to have the siren removed from Town Hall’s bell tower.

It is one of two sirens in town and for decades has alerted volunteer firefighters to calls for service.

Dale Hill, president of Funkstown’s fire company, says fire officials weren’t notified that town officials planned to discontinue the siren. He says the siren has alerted him to multiple fire calls over the years and remains useful. He plans to meet with fire company officials to see if there’s interest in getting the siren reactivated.

But Mayor Paul Crampton Jr. says there have been complaints about the siren and questions about whether it’s still really needed.
