University of Virginia Campaign Urges Pedestrians to Cross Safely

The University of Virginia is urging pedestrians to pay attention to safety when they cross streets.

Media outlets report that the university launched a four-day pedestrian safety campaign on Tuesday. The campaign, called HOOS, advises pedestrians to stop conversations and music when they cross streets. Pedestrians also are advised to obey traffic signals, cross at designated sidewalks and show respect.

U.Va. police Lt. Melissa Fielding says four pedestrians have been hit by vehicles at the university this year, compared to one in 2012. Three pedestrians were hit in 2011, four in 2010 and three in 2009.
