Police Agencies Target Truck Safety on Bay Bridge

Police in Anne Arundel County are teaming with the Maryland Transportation Authority police to conduct commercial vehicle safety inspections to help keep unsafe vehicles off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

On Tuesday, both agencies began the joint initiative. Transportation Authority Officer Tom Goloski says some tractor-trailers reach the toll plaza with brakes out of adjustment, flat tires and missing lug nuts. So police are working to get such vehicles off the road before they cross the bridge.

Most of the vehicles inspected on Tuesday were safe.

The move comes after a truck crashed into two cars on the bridge in July, sending one car falling 27 feet into the water. A report cited distracted driving by the truck driver as the cause of the crash.
