Residents in the Vermont town of Rockingham want the community to buy the remnants of a covered bridge destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, to put up an informational kiosk at the site.
The Bartsonville Covered Bridge was built in 1870. Its foundation washed out and it floated down the Williams River during the storm.
Selectboard member Susan Hammond says she wants the town to assemble the informational center from the old bridge parts to tell the story of its history and of Bartonsville village.
The Eagle-Times reports Rockingham officials are planning to consult with the Vermont League of Cities & Towns to negotiate a deal to buy the remnants.
The league, the municipality’s insurance agent, took possession of the remnants after the storm.
