Changes Mulled for Rhode Island Road After Deadly Crashes

July 25, 2013

Transportation officials are looking at changes to Route 102 in Burrillville, R.I., after a string of serious crashes, including two that killed three people in July alone.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation says it is considering adding rumble strips to the center median of the two-lane stretch of road, which would alert distracted drivers if they cross over into the oncoming lane. They’re also considering lowering the current 50 mile per hour speed limit.

Police blame the crashes on distracted drivers, and Burrillville police stepped up patrols along the stretch in the past week.

They issued 126 citations, a number that surprised even police. The citations were for offenses ranging from speeding to texting while driving to failing to use seat belts.
