New Jersey Town Raised $250K to Rebuild Boardwalk

January 11, 2013

Most of the contributors to a New Jersey town’s fund to rebuild a boardwalk destroyed by Superstorm Sandy are out-of-towners.

Belmar has raised $250,000 since its “Buy a Board” campaign began in late November.

Mayor Matt Doherty tells the Asbury Park Press people from California to the Carolinas have sent money.

But Doherty says the biggest donation came from a Belmar resident who contributed $15,000. He would not identify the contributor.

Contributions range from $25 for “beach bums” to $5,000 for “big kahunas.” Contributors will have their names listed at the beach entrance of their choice.

The town on Wednesday broke ground on the reconstruction project. It’s expected to cost at least $6 million to replace the 1.3-mile boardwalk.
