Connecticut relatives of an American basketball player who died after being beaten in a Romanian bar are announcing a wrongful death lawsuit a day before the one-year anniversary of his death.
Chauncey Hardy’s family filed the lawsuit in federal court in New Haven last week, seeking $210 million in damages from several defendants including the attacker, the Romanian Basketball Federation and two unnamed Romanian doctors who treated Hardy.
Hardy was 23 when he died on Oct. 9, 2011, after being punched in a bar in Giurgiu, where he played for a Romanian basketball club. He played basketball at Xavier High School in Middletown and Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.
WVIT-TV reports that Hardy’s mother will hold a news conference Monday afternoon at her lawyer’s office in West Haven.
