New Maryland Moped Helmet Law Goes Into Effect Monday

September 28, 2012

Maryland moped riders will have to wear helmets and eye protection beginning Monday.

The new law also requires that motor scooters and mo-peds be titled and insured. And scooter drivers must also have either a valid driver’s license or a mo-ped/scooter permit. Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration spokeswoman Caryn Coyle says that means anyone with a suspended or revoked driver’s license is breaking the law if they ride a scooter.

The spokeswoman says those caught without helmets, eye protection or a windscreen can be fined up to $500.

Drivers of motor scooters and mo-peds are required to follow the same rules of the road as bicycles. Maryland has about 3,500 motor scooters.
