Long Island Railroad Escalator Review Shuts Down 10 Escalators

August 22, 2012

Almost half of the LIRR’s 19 escalators are shut down due to safety concerns found during a review following the death in March of a woman on an escalator at the Lindenhurst station.

Newsday reports that workers have been making repairs and installing new safety technology on 10 of the 19 escalators.

LIRR said one of the escalators, in Hicksville, has been reopened while the work continues on the other nine.

It said the escalators were taken out of service for safety reasons and would not be put back in service until all new safety features were working properly.

The LIRR plans to have all or most of the escalators at eight LIRR stations working by September. Of the eight stations, five have working escalators.
