A worker is dead after the wall of a trench collapsed at a New York City construction site.
The accident happened shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday on Staten Island.
Police say the 29-year-old worker sustained severe head trauma when he was buried in the collapsed wall. He was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim’s name was not immediately released.
A spokeswoman for the city Department of Buildings said the department has issued a stop-work order for the site.
The spokeswoman, Ryan FitzGibbon, said the contractor will be cited for violations including working without a permit and failing to shore up the trench.
