Pennsylvania Prosecutors Seek at Least 5 Years in $10M Fraud

May 9, 2012

Prosecutors are seeking at least five years in prison for a western Pennsylvania woman who stole more than $10 million from the car dealership where she worked.

Patricia Smith is scheduled for sentencing Wednesday. In court documents filed last week, federal prosecutors said Smith only stopped swindling Baierl Acura after another employee started asking questions about suspicious transactions.

Smith allegedly stole $10.2 million from the Pittsburgh-area dealership over a six-year span, financing private charter flights, Super Bowl tickets and a six-person lunch prepared by Food Network star Ina Garten. Smith’s salary at the time was about $53,000.

Smith’s attorney says her client should get no more than four years in prison because of her cooperation. She pleaded guilty in January.
