Massachusetts Changing Signs at Toll Plazas

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is launching an overhaul of signs at toll plazas on the Turnpike, Tobin Bridge and Airport Tunnels to improve safety and meet federal highway guidelines.

Starting this week, drivers will see the “Fast Lane” signs come down and E-ZPass signs go up. “Cash Only” signs will also be updated as part of the project.

State Transportation Secretary Richard Davey says the changes are meant to combat driver hesitation and confusion that can jeopardize safety at toll plazas.

Davey said the changes won’t affect the state’s 1.7 million transponder holders. He said E-ZPass and Fast Lane are now one and the same.

The $1.2 million project is funded primarily through a federal safety grant with work expected to continue through the summer during off-peak hours.
