Cause of Massachusetts Condo Fire Remains Unknown

Investigators have been unable to determine the cause of a six-alarm fire at a Marlborough, Mass., condominium complex this week but say there is no indication of arson.

The blaze Monday morning at the Lake Williams condo complex displaced more than 50 residents, but no one was hurt.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan and Marlborough Fire Chief James Fortin said in a statement Wednesday it is thought the fire started in a storage area of the attic, but damage was so extensive that the investigative team was not able to conclusively determine a cause.

They said the building did not have a sprinkler system, which was not required at the time of construction.

The fact the fire happened during the day and the fire alarm system worked probably helped prevent injuries.
