Frederick County, Md., lawmakers have agreed to increase the potential fine for drivers who illegally pass a school bus.
The county’s board of commissioners unanimously approved the plan Tuesday. Violators who fail to stop for a school bus with its stop sign activated will get a civil citation in the mail and could face a maximum fine of $250, although a district judge will ultimately decide the amount of the fine.
The ordinance allows citations to be issued to violators who are caught on school bus cameras.
The county school system has 433 buses in its fleet. Forty to 50 buses will be equipped with cameras.
