Virginia’s Dominion to Appeal Asbestos Exposure Fines

A Dominion Virginia Power spokesman says the company will appeal fines issued by the state over asbestos at its Surry nuclear power plant.

The Daily Press says the Department of Labor and Industry ordered Dominion to pay $12,600 in fines stemming from an April incident. Twelve contract workers were exposed to asbestos after they cut a pipe.

Dominion spokesman Richard Zuercher tells the newspaper that the company determined the exposure didn’t exceed federal limits. He says the safety of the workers or their families was never at risk.

A state report obtained by the newspaper under the Freedom of Information Act says Dominion failed to tell the workers the location and quantity of asbestos at the plant.

The report also says Dominion didn’t properly label pipes that contained asbestos.
