Man Killed in Connecticut Woodchipper Incident

March 24, 2011

Connecticut police say a 58-year-old owner of a tree service company has died after being struck at an Old Lyme work site by a woodchipper attached to a truck.

The Day newspaper reports that police identified the victim Tuesday as Thomas Lomas, owner of Lomas Tree Service, which is based in Old Lyme.

He was taken to Shoreline Clinic in Essex, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the incident occurred shortly before noon. They say the woodchipper was being hauled by a company truck, and that the worker was fatally injured when that vehicle backed up and he was trapped under the woodchipper’s trailer.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration and state police are investigating circumstances of the incident.
