Chinese Ship Seized in Virginia after Accident Released

March 10, 2011

A Chinese ship seized by federal authorities after it and its owner were sued over a crane accident at APM Terminals in Portsmouth, Virginia has been released.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the Zhen Hua 24 departed Sunday. It was released after the insurer for the ship’s owner sent “letters of undertaking” to APM Terminals Virginia Inc., the Virginia Port Authority and an affiliate stating it would cover damage for which the company may be liable.

The authority and its affiliate filed the federal lawsuit following the Feb. 14 accident.

Port officials say the ship delivered two new cranes and was pulling away when another crane aboard the vessel clipped one crane on the dock, causing it to fall off its tracks.
