Pennsylvania Arsonist Ordered to Repay $97K to Insurers

March 1, 2011

A woman is returning a northeastern Pennsylvania campground to the former owners after pleading no-contest to an arson charges stemming from a fire at the property.

Tamara Santarelli was also sentenced to seven years’ probation and ordered to repay nearly $97,000 to insurance companies. She had pleaded no-contest to arson and reckless endangerment in the fires at the Shady Rest Campground in Susquehanna County.

The campground’s former owners, Arnold and Alice Manning, tell WNEP-TV they had sold the property to Santarelli and her husband, even handling the financing. The couple says a fire nearly destroyed the campground after they started foreclosure proceedings because the Santarellis failed to make mortgage payments.

Santarelli did not speak with reporters following the sentencing. The Mannings say they’ll keep the campground in the family.
