New York-Based Tall Ship Restored After Arson

The Black Pearl will sail again.

The 62-year-old restored tall ship will offer daily cruises from its Lake Ontario berth in western New York later this week, more than two weeks after an arson fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the vessel.

Niagara County sheriff’s deputies summoned owners Amanda and Nicholas Alexander to the harbor at Olcott after it was discovered a fire had broken out early on the morning of June 12.

No one has been arrested for setting the fire. Authorities say their investigation continues.

The Lockport couple found the ship in Connecticut, made it seaworthy and sailed it last year to Olcott, where it has been docked while undergoing additional restoration work.

The 53-foot ship, considered part brig and part schooner, can hold up to 35 people.
