Storm Waves Take Toll on Maine’s Mount Desert Rock

Officials at Maine’s College of the Atlantic say heavy seas spun off from Hurricane Bill damaged several buildings on Mount Desert Rock, where the school conducts field studies far off the coast.

Large waves and strong winds caused by Hurricane Bill resulted in the death of a young girl and injuries to more than a dozen other visitors to Acadia National Park when a huge wave swept over them on Aug. 23.

The College of the Atlantic uses a former lighthouse keeper’s house on Mount Desert Rock, which is about 20 miles south of Mount Desert Island, for marine research studies.

Professor Sean Todd told the Bangor Daily News that the high surf blew through a door and the windows at the house while ripping apart an island boathouse and generator shed.
