Fire investigators say a four-alarm blaze that heavily damaged a historic church in Middleborough was caused by an electrical malfunction.
The fire Monday morning at the Central Congregational Church forced the town to cancel its annual Memorial Day parade, which was to pass the 161-year-old church on Main Street.
State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan thanked investigators on Tuesday for working quickly to determine the cause. He said that fires in churches and other houses of worship are particularly devastating to communities.
The church’s pastor, the Rev. Bruce Smith, has vowed the church will rebuild.
