Wife Awarded $1.9M for Forklift Death

April 27, 2009

A Maine woman has won a $1.9 million settlement six years after her husband was killed while operating a forklift at the Prime Tanning plant.

Forty-eight-year-old Thomas Brown was killed when he was knocked off the forklift and pinned between a shelf and the machine on Aug. 1, 2003, according to Foster’s Daily Democrat.

A federal jury originally awarded Claire Brown $4.2 million in 2006, saying the Ohio-based Crown Equipment Corp. did not provide adequate safety warnings about its product.

A state limit reduced the settlement and appeals by the company prolonged the proceedings.
