Prosecutor: No Charges in Fatal Virginia Firetruck Wreck

September 4, 2008

A Virginia prosecutor says he won’t seek charges in a head-on collision between a firetruck and a pickup truck that killed two people.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Joel Branscom said Friday that there’s no evidence to support manslaughter or reckless driving charges against the firetruck’s driver, 27-year-old volunteer firefighter Lucas McCullough of Eagle Rock.

Virginia State Police say McCullough was driving an Eagle Rock Volunteer Fire Department truck north on U.S. 220 to respond to a traffic accident when the firetruck collided with the pickup on May 26.

Killed in the accident were the pickup’s driver and a passenger.

A state police investigation found that McCullough couldn’t steer the truck because the water in the vehicle’s tank had shifted.
