Starting in January, kids on snowmobiles and ATVs will have to wear helmets and eye protection in New Hampshire that meet strict standards.
Governor John Lynch has signed the bill, which applies to operators and passengers under age 18.
Minors already were required to wear protective gear, but the law did not spell out what kind. Concerns were raised that some youths were wearing gear inadequate to protect them from snowmobile and ATV crashes. The new law requires the helmets to meet the federal standards for motorcycle helmets.
The requirements take effect Jan. 1.
