No Injuries from Roanoke Tornado

A tornado touched down briefly in Roanoke earlier this week but the National Weather Service says there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Meteorologist Dave Wert in Blacksburg says the tornado touched down at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday about four miles southeast of downtown Roanoke.

Wert says preliminary reports indicate the tornado was on the ground for a minute or less and its strength isn’t immediately known, although it knocked down power lines and trees, including on houses.

Wert says a weather service team will be sent out to investigate the damage.

Appalachian Power spokesman Phil Moye says the storm knocked out power to 4,000 customers in southwest Virginia on Tuesday night.
