Vermont’s Catholic diocese isn’t going to rebuild St. Mary’s Church in Mount Holly, Vermont, which was destroyed by fire in December.
Bishop Salvatore Matano delivered the news following a special Mass at St. Patrick’s in Wallingford.
Matano says the insurance money from the fire will be distributed proportionally to the church or churches that St. Mary’s parishioners decide to attend.
Diana Garrow, who played the organ at St. Mary’s for 35 years, says hearing the church won’t be rebuilt is like having the fire all over again.
Before the fire, between 50 and 60 people attended Mass at St. Mary’s every week.
Many parishioners are now attending Mass at other churches.
