Northrop Grumman Corp. has paid a $5,000 fine for violating federal safety standards in the February death of one of its employees at its Newport News shipyard.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration found that Northrop Grumman did not provide a body harness for 19-year-old Kevin Batten, who died after falling off the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson while working on its ventilation system.
Shipyard spokeswoman Jennifer Dellapenta said the company is requiring more training for those performing ventilation work. OSHA also required that the company ensure those working in similar situations wear harnesses.
