Vermont Officials Worry about Flooding

Vermont officials are hoping against a quick warm-up for fear that fast melting of Vermont’s deep snow pack could trigger flooding.

One potential trouble spot is the Deerfield River in Wilmington, where the town has placed a crane by the river to break up ice if it jams, as is feared might happen.

Vermont Emergency Management spokesman Mark Bosma says his agency will meet with National Weather Service officials this week to come up with a list of the most likely trouble spots for potential flooding around the state.

State officials are urging homeowners in flood-prone areas to make sure they have flood insurance. The insurance takes 30 days to take effect, so people are being urged not to wait until a flood is imminent.
