Its really easy to say that you’d give up all the gas guzzlers to save the soldiers lies-actually if you read up on the various peace movements in the 20’s and 30’s, you’d find similar sentiments.
Unfortunately the world-not just the US lives on oil and oil related profits. If we don’t get ours, than Chindia will-the increase in their consumption has far and away outstripped ours over the last 10 years and if the projections are right, will over take our consumption in the next 5 years.
The problem with your argument is that you take a sentimental statement and play it out in a vacuum, as if other countries will somehow play nice if only we do.
The history of the world has ALWAYS involved a competiton for natural resources and will continue. What HAS changed is folks like you-instead of wanting more for America and Americans, you want to restrain us, but not our competitors-the Kyoto Treaty is a great example-we have to cut back on OUR growth and development and Chindia can grow and use all they want.
I’m a vet and I have no probelm making friends and securing all the oil we need so that my family and yours can stay employed and keep our homes warm.

I personally have found that old cliche “you can catch mor flies with honey than vinegar” to be true. Playing nice generally encourages others to play nice as well.
It worked out so well for Neville Chamberlain and Britain…ok, Adolf, you take that country, but stop there and be nice because we were nice to you…and if you don’t stop there we’ll get together and issue a letter advising you that you haven’t been nice and we’ll vote that you weren’t nice and consider sending you another letter if you don’t stop then.
Funny thing is (re the actual Franken subj) here is a guy who make a living of making fun of people when their subords drop the ball, but I’m sure that will be his defense here…those other people are stupid when they screw up…but not Al.

IF we just spent it on rebuilding our infrastructure, creating jobs,I bet we would not be in this recession right now.
There are no terrorist attacks that I can see. Where are they? Oh right, they are in sleeper cells in places like Lackawanna NY. They just sleep all day instead of doing their jobs, which is to go blow themselves up at the mall and scare us. But im not in the least bit scared. I dont feel terrorized at all.
