Virginia Safety Crackdown Catches Fewest Bad Drivers in Years

Virginia State Police hope some new statistics mean drivers are being more cautious on highways statewide.

Officials say the most recent highway safety crackdown produced the lowest numbers of traffic summonses and criminal arrests since the operation began in 2006.

State troopers patrolled Interstates 295, 85 and 77 on Sunday and Monday as part of the most recent traffic safety effort. The operation resulted in 1,033 citations for violations.

No fatalities were reported on the three targeted interstates during the operation.

Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel W. Steven Flaherty says he hopes the numbers are an indication that more motorists are realizing the importance of highway safety and complying with Virginia’s traffic laws.
