Virginia Police Traffic Sting Catches 3,500 Drivers in 2 Days

Virginia police stopped more than 3,500 drivers for traffic violations during a statewide crackdown along Interstate 64 last Friday and Saturday.

Virginia State Police’s “Operation Air, Land & Speed” safety initiative targeted more than 200 miles of the state artery.

Violations ranged from speeding to reckless driving and driving without a seatbelt.

Along the Richmond division’s approximately 88 miles of I-64, state police stopped 583 speeding vehicles and 124 reckless drivers. Troopers arrested three impaired drivers and cited 86 unbuckled motorists.

The average speed of those cited in the Richmond division was 79 mph.

Troopers patrolling approximately 78 miles of I-64 from James City County to Chesapeake stopped 575 drivers for speeding, with an average speed of 76 mph.

Authorities cited a total of 3,560 people statewide.

This was the sixth enforcement operation along Interstates 64, 81, 85, 95 and 295 since July 2006.

The combined total for all six operations, including the I-64 effort, exceeded 31,000 summonses and arrests.
