R.I. Governor Names College President as Beacon Mutual Director

May 8, 2006

Rhode Island Governor Donald L. Carcieri has named the president of Salve Regina University, Sister Therese Antone, Ed. D., to replace John Holmes on the board of directors for Beacon Mutual Insurance Company.

Holmes resigned from the Beacon board last week.

State law requires that all board members be Beacon Mutual policyholders. Salve Regina University holds a Beacon Mutual workers compensation policy that currently covers 482 employees.

“As the president of Salve Regina University, she represents a Beacon policyholder and understands the real world importance of workers compensation insurance to employers across Rhode Island. She has served admirably as a member of numerous boards and committees for organizations across our state, including Lifespan and BankNewport,” said Carcieri in making the announcement.

“And as someone who has devoted her life to serving her community as a Catholic nun, Sister Therese’s ethics are above question,” Carcieri added.

A native of Rhode Island, Antone was appointed president of Salve Regina University in 1994. Sister Therese earned a Bachelor’s degree from Salve Regina University, a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Villanova University; and a Doctor of Education with an emphasis in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University. She completed the Senior Executive Program at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

She has served on boards and committees, including the Finance Council of the Diocese of Providence, Blue Hen Investment Company, AAA Southern New England, BankNewport, U.S. Naval War College, Lifespan Corporation, Newport Art Museum, Commission on Women in Higher Education of the American Council on Education, and the Newport County Fund of the Rhode Island Foundation.

In addition to many other honors and awards, Sister Therese was the 1998 recipient of the National Conference Humanitarian Award, the 1998 John E. Fogarty Achievement Award, and the Mercy Higher Education Leadership Award. Sister Therese is also a 2006 inductee to the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
