Jury selection has started for a woman charged with conspiring with a state senator to launder money to conceal her illegal operation of an insurance business.
A panel of 12 jurors and 4 alternates will be selected to hear the case.
Gwendolyn Joseph Moyo isn’t a lawyer but is representing herself in a case that already has brought down state Sen. Derrick Shepherd.
The Marrero Democrat pleaded guilty Friday to a conspiracy charge and resigned from the Senate. It’s unclear whether Shepherd will testify against Moyo.
U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier denied a motion Tuesday to postpone Moyo’s trial.
Prosecutors say Moyo laundered roughly $2 million to conceal her unlicensed operation of a bond brokering business.
