It would be interesting to know the age brackets of the fatalities, the types of cycles being driven, the time of day the accidents occur, and whether alcohol was a factor. Most mature, experienced riders of touring bikes don’t have these kinds of accidents.

My guess is it’s males between the ages of 18-25 riding “crotch rockets” at high rates of speed. Ah…..the natural selection process at it’s best. The good thing is these are usually single vehicle accidents where only the “donorcycle” driver gets killed. Also, I think medical providers should refuse to pay for treatment of injuries that would have been prevented by a helmet.

“Of those riders, the majority (80 percent) were either not wearing a helmet or it was improperly used. The majority (88 percent) were men and 44 percent were age 45 or older. Alcohol was a factor in 35 percent of the fatal crashes.”

Sweet. I see this as Darwinism at it’s finest.

One thing you don’t mention in Colorado is that fatalites were down in 2006 and 2007.

There are absolutely no reliable statistics on how many riders are riding, how many miles they are riding, etc. Even the standards for reporting accidents/fatalities have changed over the years, so the statistics may not be comparable.

Don’t get the idea I’m anti-safety. I’d like to see full face helmets, a protective jacket, pants and boots mandatory.

I’d also like to see a tiered licensing system like they have in other states as well as on the road testing done with a video camera on the bike to progress through the tiers.

I think bike size should be limited and a person only be allowed to move up at different mileage intervals and demonstrated skills.

Also, a training program should be available for those that would follow it.

I’d also like to see telephoto cameras used to capture really crazy stuff – speeds well over the speedlimit, wheelies, etc. and have the privelege to ride taken away from these people.

I find it crazy that a person can buy a bike and ride it home without even a learner’ permit. You can’t buy a car here without a license, why should you be able to buy a motorcycle?

I’d like the BRC or equivelent mandatory for a license. However, to do this, the number of slots would have to be greatly increased, especially in warmer weather.
