The severity of these acre eating wild fires has been compounded by remnants of dot.com rush. The added affluence into a class of individuals who often espouse great care in demanding “let nature take its course” is now coming back to haunt those who wanted to ‘rough it’. In the time before the white man came on the scene the Native Americans did an excellent job managing the forestry eco system. In their nomadic ways in their travels they kept the ‘squaw-wood’ policed up to about head high. Many unwanted low to medium brush species were not a presence, yet they now make marvelous kindling to spread fire from the low grasses to the low limbs that crown beautifully(from a safely long distance) and expand a normal low fire into a wildfire. Suggestion: With the Non-recession we are in and wholesale purchases dropping and increasing unemployment coupled to increasing unsecured mortgage debt, we need a CCC to go forth and harvest the squaw-wood and excess fuels from heavily fueled fire-ways. Getting everyone to stop sitting on their hands and pointing at everyone else as “it’s their job” is the real hurdle. This type of action could be done probably better by cub scouts and brownies. Better yet, I think we should have a special Department Of Wildfire Action Planners. (aka DOWAP) then Geo jr and Papa Smurf would have a trio, while nothing got done.
