This is another scam by the Dept. of Justice that lacks focus on the real issue. Why sue the foreign owner of a ship that is being piloted (as required by U.S. Navigational Law) by an American harbor pilot? It’s the CA state pilot commission that should be sued. They licensed and employed the guy who slammed this super tanker into the bridge. The negligence is obvious. Not only did the pilot negligently steer the ship into the bridge, he failed to report it in a timely manner. In foggy conditions one man should not take it upon himself to determine the severity of the damage and ensuing oil spill. He should have called for assistance immediately and get an independent assessment of the damage.

On a related note, when are people going to focus on the root cause? i.e. building a tanker with a hold that is protected from such accidents. I don’t know if the “double hull” design is the solution, but something has to change or the world will be facing ecological catastrophes until the end of time.

Just so you know, it was not a foggy day when this occurred. It was actually a nice, clear and rather warm day. BTW- I have a nice view of the Bay Bridge from my office.
