I’ve followed this bill closely since it was introduced, and have watched all testimony from supporters and opponents. It was not shelved because of opposition of law enforcement, it was shelved because several Judiciary Committee members think the bill is too lenient and would basically legalize it for recreational purposes. Letting users grow 12 plants was a major factor as why it was passed over, along with the long list of qualifying medical conditions. Even after the bill is revised, if it gets passed it still has to go to the senate. Last week SB272 was introduced which is basically HB166 with no home growing at all, and not as many medical conditions that would qualify patients. IMHO, it is SB272 that has the most chance to pass if Kentucky does pass any marijuana legislation this year.

Sorry, that’s a hard stretch. – I’ve been following marijuana reform for more than 40 years. – Those in “opposition” never want a ‘little less legalization.” — They don’t want ANY legalization.

I’m going to have to go with the reporter on this. – Despite the ‘crocodile tears’ of police who used to say, “We don’t make the laws. We just enforce them,” – they have been lobbying heavily for decades against any form of legalization. —- Because it’s HUGELY profitable for them.

The fraudulent, marijuana prohibition gives police millions of dollars in asset forfeitures, millions more in the federal bribe of “drug war” grants, easy overtime, easy arrests, easy convictions and easy promotions. – It horrifically, gives police an evil key to unlock our rights to privacy and our constitutional protections.

The fraudulently enacted marijuana prohibition has been the primary pillar of the encroaching police state.

It know the state police could and should use their grants to squash this new epidemic in every city and county in ky. It’s called meth and it’s taking over and causing more problems than the opioids crisis that’s out there. I see it everyday and I know the ksp does too. Marijuana is nothing like meth and opioids. It could possibly be the foremost leader in fighting this drug disaster of opioids and meth by helping to rid our cities and counties of the want for something to take place of the killing kind of drugs.

It’s all about money. The Kentucky State Police started having annual training with the DEA about three years ago to eradicate marijuana. Sad, really, since the KSP has been at that game since the 70’s. They could teach the DEA a thing or two. But since we *still* have the War on Drugs, there is a lot of Federal funding available (to line pockets),

“Nemes said he believes medical marijuana can help people but he does not like several provisions in the bill, especially one that would allow each medical marijuana patient to possess up to 12 mature cannabis plants. “That seems excessive,” he said.”
This is from the Lexington Herald Leader, Kentucky’s biggest newspaper. Note that I never implied “Those in ‘opposition” never want a ‘little less legalization.'” I agree with you on that 100%. I was simply saying that the reason the bill was shelved was not because of law enforcement opposition as reported by Claims Journal. More or less pointing out a correction, not disputing the story in its entirety.

I agree, it’s big money for these police departments.
But I believe there are enough other crimes to keep our officers employed and why not with the regulation and taxation of a new legalized product funnel some of those state revenues back to our law enforcement departments.
I would be willing to estimate that the revenue received from legalization would be more than plenty to fund programs in Ky and cut down on our federal dependence of cash.

Weird, that everywhere who has legalized medical and even recreational use has seen a decrease in underage use. But people in KY think that it will increase use for kids. Do your research, stop spreading lies!

Wait, I thought police only enforced the law? bahahahah, filthy pigs guarding their wallet. They shouldn’t even be allowed a voice where a changing law is concerned, especially one where there is known bias and a financial incentive for that group..

I was also disappointed in the committee That little police officer walk all over all the work that they had done supposedly for the HB 166 bill that never got out of the committee , I’m ashamed. There was no place for this police officer to be speaking at a medical marijuana bill that had certain criteria , to meet. By the physicians that was there as a professional stance on approving medical marijuana for certain patients , mainly the old or the very sick not for the teenagers in high school as the police officer spoke .
If this was UK basketball game , and our players decided just to lose it .! What would happen ?
Coach Cal would not let it happen! but the committee that made up the bill was so quick to throw it in the garbage or put it on the shelf , that was simply in embarrassing , there is 29 states 3 that my brothers in each corner of the United States are allowed to smoke either medical or both medical and recreational marijuana But in our Great state of Kentucky “we cannot see fit to treat our Vetrans our elderly and our sick with medical marijuana ” that The professionals that have strict guidelines on how this may have to go as far is the 12 plants then I hear 10 , I say a total of 3 imature and three flowering. If the committee cannot put a bill together for medical marijuana in 2018 then I will put myself out there if allowed and write a bill that will pass the committee please email me if needed. Greg

I challenge anyone involved in this legislation to spend the day with my son and experience what the overwhelming pain that conventional medicine can’t treat does to a person! He has been down the narcotic road a long time and it’s ugly!! Just come sit and see what untreatable pain can do to someone!!
