Alabama’s Revenue Department is launching an online system that will allow county license plate officials to verify whether a vehicle has liability insurance.
State Revenue Commissioner Julie Magee said the Insurance Verification System will allow license plate officials and law enforcement to determine immediately whether a vehicle complies with Alabama’s law for mandatory insurance coverage.
The Legislature passed a requirement last year that the system be online by Jan. 1, 2013, to make sure motorists aren’t ignoring Alabama’s law. Magee said 10 counties are currently piloting the system before its statewide launch in January. They are Covington, Elmore, Henry, Houston, Jefferson, Limestone, Mobile, Shelby, Tuscaloosa and Winston.
