that the problem, because this gal was in High School and was talking about an adult… that adult should have enough to know that kids will say anything… if they need to express their feelings that is ok… if they expressed them directly to you, you’re an adult not a kid – so there was no bullying… how many folks get the ugly finger and don’t complain? it got out of hand by the principal and i am glad it was straightened out, but $1 damage is a tad too little!

No, $1 it too much! This girls parent’s should have punished her and grounded her! Her FB page should be monitored first of all. What if she was only 15 and it was her place of employment that she was talking about? What if she worked for your agency and she talked about one of your carriers like that and started a group? Where does it end and at what point do we teach our kids about respect? I agree with what the school did. I think they tried to teach her a lesson and the court said you are not allowed to. That is the problem, kids are told that they don’t have to respect authority because of the first ammendment – you can say anything about anyone because you have rights! Good luck hiring that girl, because I will avoid it at any cost!

what happens to freedom of speech? we just sit down and lay away? don’t think about how we feel? there probably are folks that you don’t like and you could tell them a thing or two. you don’t have to keep it inside, you can share your feelings. this is why i am sorry for the professional ballplayer. for the same reason getting fined $75,000 or more… just because we can talk? then if we don’t talk to the media we get fined too? where will it end? if i don’t cause a riot or have you running out of a building for a scare (like FIRE!) then you should be allowed to share your opinions whether it be verbal or on Facebook.

yes, the girl has rights, but this girl was not a child – she was 17 years old in 2007. Some may view this as a civil rights violation of the girl, but as a former teacher, I can tell you that teachers get bullied too… they get their cars broken into, tires popped, death threats, and verbally and physically attacked by students, yet they have no rights to fall back on. When comments are made about a teacher, whether online or offline/ in print or verbally, it feeds a sort of “cancer” that spreads amongst students and can be dangerous for the teacher, the school, and even students. This girl should not have received a dime in my opinion. What rights does the teacher have when her reputation is being smeared and her safety potentially at risk?

What you do not see is that at some point no matter your rights, you shoudl nto be able to hurt another person or disrespect them. So someone should be able to just walk up to my kids and tell them whatever lies they want to about me? That is their right, correct? They should be able to hurt my kids feelings… according to you. Respect, decency – we forgot about all of those things a long time ago in this country because we take the concept of “our rights” and want to make it so broad and don’t give a hoot about anyone else’s feelings. That my friend is the problem. I don’t care how much money the baseball player makes, good for him or her! I do care about respect and decency. That is what this country is supposed to be about. That is what wars are supposed to be fought over. That is what we are supposed to teach out kids. Not that our child is better than everyone else – like their teacher. If you have a problem you talk about it. You don’t post it on FB so everyone knows about it. That makes you a coward, not a Social Media hero.

It is wrong to bully anyone no matter who they are or what they do. Freedom of speach does not preclude the teacher from civit suit against the family does it? Try turning the tides on people like this.

A little law suit from that bullied teacher against that now adult student for slander or defamation might shake her up a little, while she is feeling like she is right and the school was wrong…

I must have missed something. Where is the bullying? She harshly criticized her teacher and that’s bullying? There must be more to this story. When didn’t kids (or young adults)criticize teachers they don’t like?

my wife is a teacher of kindergartners, and we like to know that kids can say things respectfully. but that still does not mean i can say how i feel about you! i can still be respectful without the bullying. this is the problem w/most folks they feel that just because someone said one little thing bad, that we can just run and scream. how many times have you heard them talk, even here about OBAMA? how many of you said bad things? many, but yet, it’s our freedom of speech that allows you to express yourself. just because you make one statement, does not constitute any bullying or violence of any matter…

ummmmm – kind of my point though. What you say and where you say it mean a lot. If you say something to your wife it is different than if you post it on a billboard. If you say something to your mother it is different than if you post it on your FB page. The world is different than your private world. What people do not get is that Social Media is not private.
