Problem is that you literally have to pass an act in the SC state house to obtain a “no wake zone” anywhere in the state. This is extremely difficult and nearly impossible to achieve given what it takes because it involves a piece of legislation for EACH individual request!
And the justifications are outdated and in need of a revamp.

No Wake Zones are needed in more places especially those areas with high concentrations of docks and boating (not just near boat landings or marinas).

Additionally the incremental damage of these boats to docks is costly to property owners who pay taxes for the privelege of having a dock (and the vessels they have tied there).

There are too many inexperienced people in the water these days. Some have moved to the coast from other states, bought a boat for the 1st time, and think they are hot shots on the water. It use to be that an approaching boat made a conserted effort to pass you on each other’s right side, nowadays people in boats are zooming by any side and from almost any angle. Boat rules/ediquette have become lost in history.

Finally a lot of the higher boat concentration areas are recreational areas that are sheltered by shorelines that are eroding. While some of this is natural, the boat wake is certainly excellerating the damage to shorelines.

Meanwhile boating deaths are on the rise, incremental damage to docks and shorelines are on the rise, not to mention the rise in boater idiocy.

At least the taxpayers won’t have to pay the exhorbitant medical expenses to treat these idiots.

Excellent commentary. It is a shame. I am surprised the death toll is not higher sadly enough. Personally, I feel people need to have a boat license. I hate any sort of government intervention, but if you disagree, then you should go down to your nearest public boat landing and watch the “boaters” launch in and out of the boat ramp. It is a beautiful sight to see. SCDNR needs to put something together like a DMV license test and charge a fee to generate many for much needed SCDNR funding. God bless SCDNR, they do a phenomenal job.

I have a friend who once owned a dry storage marina facility who use to run advertisements to drum up business that simply said,

“NOTHING GOOD HAPPENS AT THE BOAT LANDING!”
