These claims have no value and the people who assert them decades after the alleged incidents are hypocrits. Anybody who lives a productive life for 30 or 40 years after an alleged event hasn’t been “injured”. If they were, psych problems would have shown up sooner and they would have come forward. It was only after these people smelled money did these alleged “abuses” crop up. Rather than unjustly enrich these people, any settlement awards should be put into a fund to help prevent a recurrence of the alleged behavior.

    Azekiel, I hear you.
    Yes.
BUT: the Church has waited so long to challenge theses predators who victimize children, that when a case reaches a jury, it can only result in a huge judgement.
-Here in NE Pa, the Scanton Archdioese was compelled to CLOSE over 100 Catholic schools and churches in 2009
There was some admission due to these type judgements, but we also read that the church dealt responsibility to lower church attendance & $upport. ( ?)
    Why?
Could it be , perhaps due to these cases of abuse that otherwise good Catholics have less allegiance to their rite ?
    Probably.
But, I for one will not abandon my church because of these criminals.
Rather, THEY,….-MUST leave the church .
And the Monsignor, Arch-Bishop, Bishop, Cardinal & Pope himself must move with lightning speed and resolve to cleanse the church of all these predators.
To do less or nothing is to continue these crimes and disgrace to continue

Well said. Think of all the harm being done to the 99% of Catholics who don’t have a problem. Closing churches and schools because the church is going bankrupt by paying money to these hypocrits who were fine for 30-40 years UNTIL money entered the picture. I can only hope there’s a special place in hell for these people and their attorneys.

Wow…nobody’s disputing the fact that the guy was abused, but you all think he’s hellbound because he waited to make the claim?

The guy was abused by a man in a position of moral and religious authority. That’s disgusting. The agnostic in me says it’s the Catholic dogma that requires these priests to live a ‘celibate’ life behind most of this.

Maybe the church shouldn’t have to pay the big claims, they certainly didn’t abuse the victim, but there’s enough evidence of this kind of priestly abuse that it’s systemic and not anecdotal. Until the Church gets it under control, I don’t have a whole lot of sympathy for them.

Wow. Great comments from uneducated, uninformed morons who believe that sexual abuse by priest has no effect on victims, unless the effect is demonstrated by immediately coming forward. Azekial, you obviously don’t understand the dynamic between a priest and a child. I recommend that you read something other than these little articles to inform yourself and maybe then you can develop an opinion based on logic, reason, and reality and not your own psychotic need to distance yourself from the experiences of little boys and girls who were abused and taken advantage of by people in power. You make me sick.
