Just because someone is at or below the poverty level doesn’t excuse them from common sense and personal responsibility. I’ve handled countless claims where smoke alarms had been provided, but the people disconnected the battery because it sounded when they were cooking their fried chicken or else they failed to replace it. There is no excuse why anyone can’t afford a $2.00 battery once a year to save their life.
While well-intended, this program merely attempts to idiot-proof alarms. Maybe a safety bulletin would be a better investment so fires could be prevented. This is an after-the-fact effort in damage control.
