If everyone on every airplane was potentially armed, there wouldn’t be any airplanes hijacked. Since, however, airplanes are no-self-defense zones, we have to go through all the trouble we go through to keep one pistol or box cutter off the plane.

You moron – what do you think would happen if a bullet penetrated a pressurized airline cabin at 36,000 feet?

Which, of course, is exactly what would happen if one of the many idiots who carry guns fired it.

What would happen? The difference in air pressure would cover the whole with the closest magazine in about five seconds. Tell me that if there were ten or twenty guns on those planes on 9/11 they still would have been hijacked. Go on, tell me that, you moron.

The 9/11 disaster came about by the peaceful, lazy, and flawed policy of comemrcial airlines that require pilots to negotiate with hijackers. If the pilots refused to open cockpit doors the 9/11 tragedy would never have happened. Because the cowardly muslin animals threatened to slice up the flight attendants with boxcutters, the pilots decided to try and reason with them. Americans don’t have the stomach for that. Big mistake. El Al requires pilots to remain in the cockpit at all costs and land the plane. Of course if the pilots were armed, they could have defeated the boxcutter wielding cowards easily.

I recall reading somewhere accounts of pilots pulling guns on attempted hijackers and even unruly passengers – back in the 1930’s-50’s. Then we got smart and decided that pilots should negotiate with hijackers, which solved everything.

Hmm, let me answer Al’s question of what would have happened – the hijacker is at the front of the plain, using the flight attendant as a human shield – apparently in Al’s universe everyone who carries a gun is also a marksman – so the passengers blast away towards the front of the plane – maybe they hit the hijacker but they probably also certainly kill the flight attendant and any passengers unfortunate enough to be sitting up front. Oh, and yes, let’s assume that NONE of the bullets penetrate into the cockpit – which is not bulletproof, by the way – and the pilot and co-pilot are unharmed, the instrument panel is not hit, and the WINDSHIELD also isn’t blown out – which of course, is likely to disable the pilot and co-pilot immediately at 350 MPH.

Like I suggested earlier, brilliant suggestion!

You’re right, defending ourselves is always wrong and too dangerous anyway, let’s just surrender to the crazies.

Tom’s argurment has (at least) one enormous hole that they try to cover up by branding their opposition as “crazies”. Any one willing to obey the “no weapons in here” law are almost certainly willling to also obey the “no killing, robbing,… here” laws. Those willing to disregard the latter will certainly disregard the former as well. The result is that the criminal brings a gun to a fist fight. And for the record, I do not feel safer seeing flack jacketed soldiers with assualt rifles and attack dogs. Zero Tolerance policies are just an excuse for officials to not use common sense or judgement. Just ask that Maryland Mayor.
